Find the right alternative for each project and integrate seamlessly with Cardano

The Cardano ecosystem offers a vast array of diverse solutions—direct blockchain node connections, specialized indexing services, high-level APIs, among many others. But navigating it involves extensive research, comparisons of features, performance trade-offs, and integration complexities, creating unnecessary friction and slowing down project development. For those just getting started in the Cardano ecosystem, the abundance of tools and approaches can feel particularly overwhelming.

The need for clear guidance on where to begin was obvious. So the Ecosystem Engineering team at the Cardano Foundation developed the Tool Compass, a smart guide to simplify the process of selecting and integrating blockchain data solutions within the Cardano ecosystem.

Beginning the work

To better understand the situation’s complexities, it proved helpful to categorize existing solutions into broad categories. We arrived at the following five main groups:

  • Direct access interface solutions like Oura, Ogmios, Yaci, UTxORPC, or Cardano Node API among others, allow developers to connect to the Cardano blockchain and retrieve raw blockchain data in real time.
  • Chain indexers like Yaci Store, Ledger Sync, DB-Sync, Kupo, Scrolls, Carp, Argus, or Mumak, offer structured and efficient ways to query historical blockchain data.
  • API providers such as Maestro, Koios, Blockfrost, and others, abstract much of the complexity, providing a streamlined way to interact with the blockchain through RESTful APIs.
  • Off-chain libraries and SDKs embed these API providers into client-side or serverless applications, reducing backend dependencies. Examples include Mesh.js, Blaze, pyCardano, Lucid, Lucid Evolution.
  • BaaS platforms like Demeter.run offer a fully managed, sandboxed environment for rapid prototyping and deployment.

Selecting the right solution from such a variety of options requires careful consideration of the application's needs.

For instance, it might involve knowing whether the solution demands real-time event streaming. Or if it calls for historical ledger data. Or lightweight API-based access. Or numerous other aspects.

So the team set out to develop a smart guide that encompasses the wide range of Cardano tools and makes choosing the right ones easier.

Introducing the Tool Compass

The just launched Tool Compass was designed to provide recommendations on alternatives to access Cardano blockchain data for different applications. It does so based on factors such as solution architecture design, feature set, and general requirements.

This approach ensures that developers can make informed decisions without extensive research, optimizing their projects for efficiency and scalability.

In addition to offering guidance on indexer selection, the Tool Compass includes comprehensive documentation. In fact, it features a library of small blueprints with practical examples and templates that developers can use to kickstart their projects.

A Guided Workflow for Developers

To further simplify the developer experience, the Tool Compass includes a structured workflow that guides users through the process of accessing blockchain data. This workflow helps developers quickly determine the most suitable solution based on their specific needs, reducing the time and complexity involved in discovering the right tools to make key architectural decisions.

With the Tool Compass, developers can streamline their workflow, gain a better understanding of how to access blockchain data, and get to the most suitable blockchain solutions with ease. They also have a straightforward, convenient way of updating and extending the Tool Compass itself.

One of the main features of this smart guide is that it’s actually based on text files anyone can edit even without programming experience. Changes to these files trigger the tool compass to rebuild, including new questionnaire paths, project features, or pros and cons.

Finding and integrating the right Cardano data solutions becomes a structured, efficient, and developer-friendly experience that can effortlessly remain up-to-date.

The Tool Compass makes interacting with Cardano solutions fast and seamless, so that developers can focus on what matters most—building impactful applications.
