Cardano Foundation Monthly Update: September 2026
Cardano turned nine as new integrations and partnerships brought its infrastructure closer to end users
Cardano marked its ninth anniversary in September, and the month brought new progress from organizations applying its infrastructure across different industries. Two applications built with Petrobras now track sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, and FC Barcelona launched a fan platform that issues verifiable credentials on Cardano.
For developers, Cardano joined the official x402 software development kit (SDK), giving artificial intelligence (AI) agents a way to pay for services in ada. A multi-year partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) will bring Cardano Academy content into its blockchain curriculum, and Foundation leaders took the case for trust-based infrastructure to stages in Dubai, Barcelona, and Zurich.
Bringing Cardano into institutional finance
Cardano Native Tokens (CNTs) are on track to gain full support on Fireblocks, a digital asset infrastructure platform that secures more than US$5 trillion in transfers each year. Today, moving CNTs through the platform requires manual steps. Because Cardano handles tokens at the ledger level, CNTs will fit directly into the policy engine and approval workflows already used by the hundreds of exchanges, banks, payment firms, and fintechs on the platform.
The integration covers two Cardano Improvement Proposals (CIPs): the token registry standard CIP-26 and the on-chain metadata standard CIP-68. For anyone issuing stablecoins or tokenized assets on Cardano, it removes a significant practical barrier to institutional demand. EMURGO, Input Output, and Intersect contributed to the work, and further decentralized finance (DeFi) integrations with Fireblocks are planned for 2027.
The Foundation joined Mastercard's Crypto Partner Program, a global initiative that brings together companies from blockchain, digital assets, payments, and financial services. Through the program's Blockchains track, the Foundation will contribute to work on cross-border transfers, business-to-business (B2B) transactions, and settlement. The program gives the Foundation a framework for engaging with the institutions that move the world's money, and a place to bring Cardano's infrastructure into those conversations.
Japan, home to one of Cardano's most active communities, gained a dedicated route to enterprise adoption as the Foundation named Pacific Meta an Enterprise Integration Partner. Pacific Meta brings knowledge of how Japanese enterprises buy and deploy technology, while the Foundation provides infrastructure expertise, so companies have guidance from identifying a use case through delivery.
A Cardano Seminar featured RealFi, which builds yield-generating stablecoin infrastructure backed by real-world credit and fixed income. RealFi lets investors fund and track cash-flowing businesses in underbanked emerging markets, turning historically hard-to-assess lending into measurable exposure. The discussion covered the project's loss protections and its progress since mainnet launch, including integrations with Lace, SundaeSwap, and Liqwid.
Making records and credentials verifiable
Supply chains offered some of the month's clearest evidence of that infrastructure at work. Cardano now serves as the public proof layer for Blockforce, a traceability platform that has anchored more than 500,000 supply chain records. Commercial data stays private on a permissioned Hyperledger Fabric network, while cryptographic proofs on Cardano let auditors, regulators, and customers confirm that a record is authentic without seeing the underlying data.
Joint engineering work cut the cost per record by 92%, moving public blockchain verification from proof of concept into production at enterprise scale. A new partnership shows how batching up to 44 certificates per transaction made that possible, with roughly 6.5 million anchors contracted by 2030 across automotive, food and beverage, and cosmetics. Trade Finance Global covered how Brazilian exporters are using the approach to meet growing European Union (EU) documentation requirements, with insights from Guilherme Pereira, the Foundation's Ecosystem Growth Specialist for Latin America.
In Brazil, the Foundation's ongoing research and development collaboration with Petrobras and Ledger Labs, the blockchain center of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), delivered two new applications that make environmental claims and fuel lifecycle data easier to trace and verify. For sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Cardano links a physical fuel certificate to a digital record of its environmental gains, while for Diesel R, Petrobras' renewable diesel brand, it connects data across production, transport, and use to support Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions reporting.
Open Food Chain anchors the compliance data food brands already collect by law and places it behind a QR code on the package, so shoppers can trace a claim such as deforestation-free back to the farm. With Kraft Heinz and Interfood on board, the platform turns data brands must already gather into a claim shoppers can check for themselves.
Sport became another practical use case for verifiable credentials. FC Barcelona launched Barça Fan Lab, developed with Andamio on Cardano and supported through Project Catalyst Fund 13. Fans who sign in with BarçaID can learn about the club's history and values, join community activities, and collect credentials in a Cardano-based portfolio of their own. For organizations with global communities, the platform offers a working model for recognizing participation in a form members carry with them.
Broadening the tools developers rely on
Behind each of these applications sits tooling that has to keep pace. Cardano became part of the official x402 SDK, the open web payments standard Coinbase created and the Linux Foundation now stewards, whose members include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, AWS, and Coinbase. With Cardano integrated, an app or AI agent can pay for a service in ada or any CNT through a single web request, without accounts or checkout pages. Services already using x402 can switch Cardano on directly, giving the emerging economy of autonomous agents a new payment route.
CIP-0113, the programmable tokens standard, is now approved and merged, with integrations complete across CardanoScan, Eternl, and Gero Wallet. Its first module cleared an audit with no critical or high-severity findings and has been submitted to the Capital Markets and Technology Association (CMTA) for certification, the Swiss body behind a token standard widely used to issue regulated securities.
Work on Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) continued to improve the efficiency of the connection between Cardano and Injective, a blockchain built for DeFi. An update to the light client is targeted for early in the fourth quarter.
Mesmo v0.1.0-pre8 now makes Cardano Client Lib, the Java toolkit the Foundation helps keep current with each network upgrade, available to teams working in Python, Rust, Go, and JavaScript.
Yaci Store, BloxBean's indexer for reading Cardano data, shipped two releases. Both stable v2.0.3 and v3.0.0-beta4 add token metadata indexing and improve governance and ledger accuracy. The beta goes further, with Java plugins for custom indexing, an analytics layer for querying chain data in SQL, broader Blockfrost compatibility, and an optional Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for connecting AI tools. Yaci v0.4.6 sharpened its handling of deeply nested native scripts and Plutus data. Applications on Cardano depend on reading the chain reliably, and these updates give them a stronger foundation.
Exchanges and other operators received Cardano Rosetta Java v2.3.1, which improves reliability and memory efficiency and fixes issues that could interrupt synchronization with the chain. Operators running earlier 2.x versions are required to upgrade.
Developer Office Hours ran five sessions in September, each focused on a practical challenge for teams building on Cardano. Demeter.run gives projects managed access to Cardano infrastructure without running their own nodes, and uplc.link lets users and auditors confirm that a deployed contract matches its published source code.
Payments came up twice, with Subbit.xyz enabling subscriptions and micropayments through a lightweight layer 2 protocol and Masumi building payment and marketplace infrastructure for AI agents. Rounding out the series, cardano-dev-skills grounds AI coding agents in current Cardano documentation so the code they produce reflects the network as it stands today.
Growing the next generation of builders
The multi-year partnership with the Venture Accelerator at the UCLA Anderson School of Management starts with a masterclass on 19 October, and students who complete it receive a Foundation-sponsored certification. From 2027, Cardano Academy content will feature in blockchain education at UCLA, which recently ranked first among public universities in the United States. Five sponsored Cardano Fellowships will support early-stage companies in UCLA Accelerate with funding and mentorship.
The Cardano Academy launched Agentic Coding on Cardano, a free course that teaches developers to build applications with an AI coding agent. Learners describe what they want to build, review the agent's smart contract code against a published 26-item security checklist, and prove each result with a real testnet transaction. Across 16 units, participants finish with a working application, an on-chain portfolio, and a verifiable credential. With AI coding agents already part of how developers work, the course teaches them to direct an agent and verify its output.
The Cardano Accelerator Program introduced its Fall 2026 cohort: Embeddo, Booomtag, VitaBaby by Vitaledger, Forg3t Protocol, Adreva Network, Palmyra Ecosystem by zenGate Global, Open Food Chain, and CropConnect by Agrow Labs. Each venture focuses on origin, identity, or data that can be verified on Cardano. Over 10 weeks, the Foundation will work with the eight project teams toward market and investment readiness, with CHF 10,000 per team for adoption milestones and a Demo Day with investors early next year.
The first cohort of the Draper University x Cardano Foundation Genesis Pre-Accelerator, a four-week Silicon Valley residency for early-stage technical founders, presented to a judging panel that included Cardano Foundation CFO Stephen Wood. Two of its 13 teams, Agentic Dynamics and ChatterPay, went on to win an industry-wide hackathon at GitHub headquarters. Genesis participants gain capital and mentorship through access to the US$80 million Draper Dragon Orion Fund, and Apex, its 10-week growth accelerator, starts on 12 October.
Cohort 3 of the SDG Blockchain Accelerator, which applies blockchain to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), introduced a demand-led model. Country Offices of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and other United Nations entities now submit validated challenges first, in areas such as digital payments, identity, traceability, and data privacy, and the Foundation nominates Cardano teams whose products match. After ada holders approved 890,400 ada through Project Catalyst Fund 13 for the first two cohorts, the Foundation is directly funding a dedicated Cardano track for up to four established teams. The structure gives mature Cardano solutions a route into live UNDP programs.
Five new Cardano Ambassadors joined the Ambassador Program in September. The program funded a dedicated bounty for Ambassadors amplifying Cardano's birthday campaign, and an Academy-backed bounty will send three Ambassadors to TOKEN2049. The community marked the anniversary with a video featuring stake pool operators (SPOs), developers, and newcomers reflecting on what Cardano means to them.
Community participation in governance decisions
Two Roundtable Talks opened public discussion on how Cardano should protect its applications and fund its future. Smart contract auditing firms and developers discussed what recent Cardano exploits reveal, how AI is reshaping both attacks and defenses, and why continuous monitoring may need to supplement one-off audits. A second session asked how Cardano should structure treasury funding for the 2027 Net Change Limit (NCL) cycle, drawing on experience from two full funding cycles under on-chain governance.
On 24 September, the Foundation hosted a live X Space on what comes next for Cardano with Cardano Foundation CEO Frederik Gregaard, Global Events Team Lead Elis Moormaa, and other Foundation leads, joined by Samiz Bayan of Draper Dragon and Amaru maintainer Damien Czapla. The panel covered TOKEN2049, node diversity, the Project Catalyst 2026 pilot, and the 2027 events strategy, with listener questions shaping the final minutes.
That events strategy is now open for community input. The 2025/26 Cardano events series delivered 20 event experiences across four continents and gave 79 Cardano projects exposure at major industry gatherings. A forum post outlines early thinking for 2027: one unified Cardano booth at 11 global conferences, a plan that depends on community backing.
Taking the trust discussion worldwide
At events in three cities throughout September, Foundation speakers shared the view that the technology behind digital finance already works and that trust now sets the pace of institutional adoption. At Crypto Expo Dubai on 9 September, Estelle Roiena, Institutional Finance and Asset Integrations Lead at the Cardano Foundation, joined a panel on real-world asset (RWA) tokenization with speakers from RWA Labs, Stellar Development Foundation, Digital Asset, and KuCoin. The discussion focused on what tokenized assets need to carry institutional weight.
On 16 September in Barcelona, Gregaard delivered the keynote "The Integrity Economy: Why Digital Trust is the New Global Currency" at the European Blockchain Convention, where the Foundation was a Gold Sponsor. He argued that identity, accountability, auditability, and cross-border assurance need to be built into infrastructure from the start. Sandro Knöpfel, Global Lead, Market Structure and Strategic Partnerships at the Cardano Foundation, joined Visa and Groupe Caisse des Dépôts on a panel about what makes a financial institution approve tokenization, while Plastiks, Andamio, No.Witness Labs, and Iagon presented live at the Cardano booth.
In Rio de Janeiro, the Foundation's team spent several days at Rio Oil & Gas discussing practical uses of blockchain in the energy sector, from supply chain data integrity to carbon markets, alongside science and technology partners and the Canadian Commission.
The month closed in Zurich, where the Foundation was a Gold Partner of CV Summit, hosted by CV Labs and CV VC with Franklin Templeton on 29 and 30 September and attended by more than 3,000 people. Gregaard returned to the integrity economy on the Anchor Stage, arguing that identity and verification determine how quickly institutions commit, and that public blockchains such as Cardano are designed to carry that trust. On 29 September, he also joined Sagar Barvaliya, Founding Partner at BFC, for a fireside chat at Alpine Tech Forum Zurich on what tokenization needs to reach scale, held alongside the launch of the Swiss Tokenization Ecosystem Report 2026.
TOKEN2049 in Singapore follows tomorrow and on 8 October, with the Foundation as Platinum Sponsor and more than 30 Cardano projects presenting on the booth stage. Teams behind 10 independent node implementations share their progress today; the Cardano track of the Origins Hackathon challenges builders to create agentic commerce with x402 for US$27,500 in prizes; and the UTXO Pitch Night with Draper Dragon and Draper University offers up to US$500,000 in funding this evening.
